For many Texas families, the rising cost of rent has become burdensome, if not nearly impossible to manage.

According to The Texas Tribune, "Texas homeowners and renters who struggle to keep a roof over their head" is at an all-time high.

A record number of households are considered "cost-burdened" meaning they pay over 30% of their income on utilities and rent.

Of course, with high rent comes the increased challenge of saving enough for a down payment on a house- a simple "luxury" that most folks would love to achieve.

One potential solution is to look outside pricey urban areas, if possible. If a family member can work remotely, or if the family has another non-traditional source of income (a small trust, perhaps) then rural areas may be a great solution.

Of course, there is quite a bit to consider before making a move to small-town life, particularly if a family member will need to seek employment. Are there even any jobs available?

It's also important to consider the quality of the available housing- it could be nearly free but if doesn't suit your needs then it is worthless. Distance to bigger cities, the quality of schools, and even the quality of the water should all be taken into account before taking the plunge.
