Long time ABC 7 news anchor Rick Cabrera spoke to The Iceman Brandon Cohn's 7th and 8th grade Public Speaking classes at Bassett Middle School today.  Cabrera, whose brother Juan is the Superintendent of the El Paso Independent School District fascinated the students with his charisma, enthusiasm and unique stories.

Rick began by introducing himself to the students and talking about his experiences in college with broadcasting, and how he was even in the same program as Steve Kaplowitz at the University of Texas.  Cabrera mentioned his intense work ethic and how it is vitally important to incorporate repetition in our lives in order to improve everything that we do and hope to accomplish.

Rick spoke about his early career in sportscasting and how important it is to be passionate about what you do in order to succeed.   Cabrera told the students about a few of the numerous athletes he has had the privilege of interviewing over the years including Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neil, and Troy Aikman.  He also mentioned the challenge of speaking in public and how even he gets nervous despite being on television virtually every day.

Cabrera inspired the students to take their Public Speaking class seriously because it will help them in the future to become effective communicators, which is one of the most important attributes that they can possess.  Rick mentioned his continuous work that he does for the Make a Wish Foundation and the various other events he has emceed over the years with ABC 7.  Cabrera told some humorous stories about the behind the scenes aspect of ABC 7, and ended by taking numerous questions from students.

My special thanks to ABC 7 anchor Rick Cabrera for taking time out of his busy schedule to come speak with my students here at Bassett Middle School!  It was a remarkable experience for our students, and you are truly a class act.
