UTEP Grabs North Alabama Transfer, Leading Scorer Christian Agnew

UTEP men's basketball snagged their first Division I transfer of the offseason with the addition of North Alabama's leading scorer Christian Agnew. 

The 6-foot-2 junior guard will have two years of eligibility with the Miners and averaged a team-high 12.8 points per game last year in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The news was first reported by CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.

A native of Detroit, MI, Angew played in 30 games this past season with 27 starts and averaged 30.8 minutes per game. In addition to his 12.8 points, he chipped in with 4.4 rebounds per game.

Through the 2018-19 season, he played in 29 games and had 18 starts as a true freshman. He was named to the ASUN All-Freshman team after averaging 11.3 points per game and scored in double-figures through 18 games. Oh, and he had a huge buzzer-beating half-court shot to defeat Stetson, earning a spot on ESPN's Top Plays that night.

In high school, Angew played both point guard and shooting guard. He helped lead John Glenn High School to a division championship. Also, Agnew was a member of TaylorMade Prep Academy in Pensacola, Fla., in 2018 where he averaged 22 points per game.

Along with UTEP, Angew had received interest from East Tennessee State, Colorado, Loyola Chicago and Utah State.

If the new one-time NCAA transfer rule is implemented this summer, Agnew will be immediately eligible for the Miners. The policy would grant any first-time Divison I transfer immediate eligibility. He could help provide a physical backcourt presence for the Miners among their guards.

However, as of Thursday afternoon, 247Sports reported that the one-time Division I transfer rule talks have stalled.

This offseason, the Miners saw guards Jordan Lathon, Nigel Hawkins, Deon Stroud and Anthony Tarke (combo guard-forward) enter the transfer portal.

UTEP now has five scholarships available.
