Earlier today, the UTEP football team wrapped up its final scrimmage before their season opener at Arkansas on September 5th. Today's scrimmage was supposed to help head coach Sean Kugler make up his mind as to who would be his starting quarterback in two weeks against the Razorbacks. The team was put in various key situations by the coaches, including: move the ball drill, which started at the offense’s own 25-yard line, the red zone offense at the 20-yard line, gotta have it (a fourth-and-six from the 50-yard line), the two-minute drill from the offense’s own 35-yard line, backed up at own one-yard line and the four-minute drill (running the clock out with 2:20 to play).

Here were the final stats from each quarterback:

  • Garrett Simpson - 4 of 5 for 42 yards and a 10-yard touchdown strike to Cole Freytag. (injured his ankle)
  • Mack Leftwich - 8 of 18 for 71 yards
  • Ryan Metz - 4 for 11 for 46 yards
  • Kavika Johnson - 8 for 14 for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns

Coach Kugler is expected to name his starting signal caller during the next week. However, we want you to vote on which player you believe should start the season as UTEP's starting quarterback.
