After 778 consecutive weeks as one of the top 50 golfers, Tiger Woods dropped out of the sport’s elite this week.

Woods, now ranked 51st in the world, is recovering from injuries to his knees and Achilles tendon that had him sidelined. He finished 2010 in second, and tied for fourth at the Masters earlier this year.

Woods, however, missed the cut at the PGA Championship this summer, the final major tournament of the year. He hasn’t won a tournament since November 2009.

Woods is expected to play in this week’s Frys.com Open and in the Australian Open next month where he hopes to turn things around.

Luke Donald now sits atop the rankings.
