Ever since our radio station began the "You Pick 'Em" promotion, station employees have always been encouraged to play. In years past, I never took the contest very seriously and picked most NFL games in about two minutes without much thought. This season, I decided to change my philosophy and play to win. That strategy paid off this week when I was informed that I was the weekly winner of "You Pick 'Em."

I correctly picked 12 out of 14 NFL games, and only missed on the Tennessee upset of Pittsburgh and Buffalo's shocking OT win over Arizona. In all the years I've played "You Pick 'Em", I had never out-picked the rest of the field. My prize package was impressive:

  • $25 gift card to Wing It
  • $25 gift card Chicago Street food
  • $50 gift card Mesa Street Grill
  • Golf for 2 w/ cart at Red Hawk Golf Course

With a great combination of delicious food and golf, I was ready to call the wife and tell her we were going out on a date this weekend thanks to "You Pick 'Em". However, before I could pick up my phone to dial, I was informed by station management that I was not eligible to win because I am a station employee. "What a travesty," I reacted. (I actually used some words that I can't repeat in this blog, so I decided to clean it up). When I asked management why we play, I was told so we can "make the contest more fun for our listeners."

I checked the official rules and found this:

1. ELIGIBILITY: This Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 states of United States and the District of Columbia, who are 18 years of age or older, and legal residents of Canada (excluding Quebec), who are of legal age of majority in their province of residence, at the time of entry. Employees of Sponsor and participating affiliates (the "Promotion Parties"), and members of the immediate family (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouse) and households of each such employee are not eligible to participate. This contest is void in Quebec and where prohibited by law.

So, much to my chagrin, I will not be enjoying great food and golf. But Judy Meyer will. She had the next best score and wins the prize package. Congratulations Judy...for finishing second to me this week!
