Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on October 8:

1927 — The New York Yankees — perhaps baseball’s greatest ever team with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and others — completed a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series with a 4-3 win at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1951 — Ford Frick replaced Happy Chandler as the third commissioner of baseball. (More info.)

1956 — Don Larsen of the New York Yankees pitched the first perfect game in World Series history, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0, in Game 5 of the Fall Classic at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1961 — Whitey Ford pitched five shutout innings in a 7-0 win against the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field in Game 4 of the World Series. The outing allowed Ford to set a World Series record of 33 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking Babe Ruth’s record of 29 2/3 innings set with the Boston Red Sox set in 1916 and 1918. (More info.)

1973 — Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds crashed into Bud Harrelson of the New York Mets at second base to break up a double play in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series at Shea Stadium. The altercation caused benches to clear and fans to hurl debris at Rose in the outfield. The Mets won the game, 9-2. (More info.)
