1939 — Joe Louis scored a technical knockout of Tony Galento in the fourth round of their fight at Yankee Stadium in New York to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1957 — Major League Baseball commissioner Ford Frick stepped in to remove three Cincinnati Reds from the starting lineup of the upcoming 1957 All-Star Game at St. Louis when it was uncovered that Cincinnati fans had stuffed the ballot box. Stan Musial, Willie Mays and Henry Aaron replaced George Crowe, Gus Bell and Wally Post. (More info.)

1958 — Getting two goals each from Pele and Vava, Brazil defeated Sweden, 5-2, to win soccer’s World Cup in Solna, Sweden. (More info.)

1958 — Mickey Wright became the first golfer to win the L.P.G.A. championship and the U. S. Open in the same year by defeating Louise Suggs at Pontiac, Mich. (More info.)

1966 — Ernie Terrell beat Doug Jones in 15 rounds at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston to retain the WBA heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1971 — The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overturned the conviction of Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) on charges of draft evasion. (More info.)

1975 — Golfer Lee Trevino was struck by lightning at the Western Open in Oak Brook, IL. (More info.)

1976 — Detroit rookie pitcher Mark Fidrych recorded his sixth win of the month as the Tigers beat the New York Yankees, 5-1, at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1992 — The U.S. Men’s National Basketball Team — the “Dream Team” — made its debut, routing Cuba, 136-57, in an exhibition prior to the Summer Olympics in Barcelona. (More info.)
