The last time the Miners were shutout at home was in 2003 when they lost 34-0 to San Diego State. Nearly a decade later SMU accomplished the same feat by defeating UTEP 17-0 at the Sun Bowl. It has been the same old song for UTEP all season long, they played a solid game defensively, but continue to have no offensive rhythm at all.
UTEP's season opener against the No.4 ranked Oklahoma Sooners was the talk of the town. Having such a highly ranked team to kickoff the season should have sold out way before the Miners stepped onto the field. Regardless of the predictions, it was like a New Year's bowl game in September and a chance to see a Big XII powerhouse in the our house.
Most people gave the Miners a slim chance to beat the 4th ranked Oklahoma Sooners at the Sun Bowl on Saturday night. UTEP showed the country and the 40,137 in attendance that they could compete with one of the nation's elite college football teams. Oklahoma won the game 24-7, but did not pull away until the 4th quarter by scoring 14 points.
I was saddened by the news that former Oakland Raider great Ben Davidson died Monday cancer night from prostate cat the age of 72. Davidson is best remembered for his trademark handlebar mustache and his menacing defensive line play for the Raiders in the late 1960s and 70s.
Saturday night was a great night -- for El Paso, for boxing and more. There were winners. There were losers, too. And there were those who saluted Dr. Francisco Cigarroa's ridiculous Sun Bowl beer ban in their own special way...
We hear about contests all the time. A lot of people think, " Why should I enter, I won't win." well that was almost the way Adam Ortega from East El Paso acted with our contest at 600 ESPN El Paso, Win Steve Kaplowitz Media Pass.
It was the perfect night for a championship fight at the Sun Bowl. The winds were relatively calm, and the extreme heat of the day had passed. The crowd of 13,467 walked away quite pleased as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. defeated Andy Lee with a 7th round TKO to retain his WBC Middleweight championship.
