On Saturday night, January 14th, UTEP hosted SMU in a C-USA Men's Basketball game. The Miners and Mustangs went into overtime before UTEP won the game 70-64 to even their record at 9-9.

The Miners began their C-USA home schedule with Houston on Saturday night, January 7th 2012 at the Don Haskins Center. Former UTEP and NBA great Tim Hardaway saw his #10 retired at halftime. The Miners won the game 70-50 and improved their record to 8-8 this season
