The 81st installment of the "Battle for the Claw" is an annual event that should not be missed. It is the oldest rivalry in El Paso, and one of the oldest rivalries in Texas. The Panthers and Tigers have played every year since 1930, with the exception of Friday November 22, 1963; the day that President Kennedy was assassinated.

The season is still early, but some trends are starting to show. Americas, El Dorado, Franklin, and Montwood look like they will be the cream of 1-5A. Riverside is as exciting as anyone. Burges and Horizon look like they will be for real, while Austin appears to be on the way back. Del Valle should climb back up the rankings. Traditional powers Coronado and Canutillo are struggling to find offense.
