Downtown El Paso Ballpark: Next Tuesday’s Big Vote

When City Council approved the new $50 million downtown ballpark with a 6-2 vote on June 26th, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Triple-A baseball was coming to El Paso by 2014. However, with mounting opposition to the ballpark's City Hall location, there is a growing concern that plans to build the new stadium might get scrapped.

When Mayor John Cook spoke publicly to David Crowder from El Paso Inc. about the return of affiliated baseball in El Paso, his comments were not what many expected. Mayor Cook implied that if the new proposed downtown ballpark's Hotel Occupancy Tax funding does not get passed in November, he would veto the entire project.

El Paso City Council To Vote on Building Downtown Ballpark on Tuesday

After a nearly decade long drought, affiliated baseball could be headed back to El Paso. On Tuesday, city council will vote on a proposal to build a downtown ballpark to lure a AAA team to El Paso. The item was posted on the council agenda this afternoon.
