It’s an exciting time for die-hard and loyal soccer fans around the world! As the 2014 FIFA World Cup teams take a break between the quarter and semifinals, UTEP’s Sun Bowl Stadium will be filled with boisterous soccer fans for the Chivas Guadalajara 2014 U.S. summer tour.
Before the players hit the pitch, natural grass will be installed. The grass, provided by Gardner Turf in Santa Teresa, N.M., will arrive and begin to be installed Wednesday, July 2. Installation will continue the evening of Thursday, July 3. The 90,000-square-feet of grass will be 1.5 inches thick. Thirty trucks will haul in the grass and take about 24 hours to install.
Club Deportivo Guadalajara, one of the most historic soccer clubs in Mexico affectionately known as Chivas, will face-off against Brazil’s Cruzeiro Esporte Clube at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 6, presented by Pepsi.
Futbol Fiesta, a free interactive fan zone, will welcome fans in the parking lot in front of the Larry K. Durham Sports Center. Futbol Fiesta will feature music, dancing, games, autograph booths, product sampling, and will run from 4:30 to 7 p.m. the evening of the game.
Public parking will be available at the Sun Bowl and Schuster parking garages, as well as lots along the campus perimeter. ADA parking will be available at the lot across the street and east of the Futbol Fiesta.
