PS4 to Be Renamed Orbis and Released in Late 2013?

Sony Playstation

The current console cycle has been one of the strongest ones in history. Everyone’s pretty content with their Xbox 360s and PS3s, and while we’ve mostly forgotten about our Wiis they’re still cranking out the occasional great game. Each successive Playstation has come around six years into the life cycle of the last one.

We know that they’re working on followups, but Kotaku is reporting that an inside source has told them the name of the console, which is “Orbis”. Certainly not the worst name for a console (Wii U, anyone?) but take it with a grain of salt.

The source also told them that select developers (Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch?) have been receiving Orbis dev kits since the beginning of the year to get cranking on new titles in time for the console’s launch, which is stated to be for the 2013 holiday season. The source also told them that it’s not planning backwards compatibility at all with PS3 games and, much like the rumors with the next Xbox console, there is going to be some kind of anti-used games measures built right into into the console.

The system is said to use an AMD x64 CPU along with an AMD Southern Islands GPU, which is apparently capable of displaying graphics at a resolution of 4096×2160. That massive resolution is well beyond most HDTVs on the market, but it will be able to output 3D games in 1080p for the first time.

Whatever this may be, it looks like there’s going to be some exciting announcements coming later on this year, perhaps even at E3 in a few months. It will certainly be interesting to see how Nintendo’s Wii U, which is slated for release later this year, compares to the competition.
