The Chapin Huskies looked to make a statement to open the defense of their District 1-4A crown. It took coach Rene Hernandez's squad until the fourth quarter to do it, but eventually the Huskies' athleticism wore down the Burges Mustangs earning Chapin its first win of the season, 26-14.

Chapin QB Seth Gonzalez didn't pass for any touchdowns -- which is unusual in the Huskies spread-option offense -- but the durable senior did run for three.

Credit the Mustangs -- though this is a different team than the one that went deeper into the state playoffs than any other from El Paso last season, head coach Marcus Graham has Burges well-coached. Not only did Michael Rasor impress, so did the poise of senior signal-caller Chris Portillo, who stayed steady in the pocket to deliver key passes when he knew he was about to get pummeled.

Chapin played a tough non-district schedule, as usual, to get ready for the defense of their district title. Mission accomplished -- for Week One of the District 1-4A race. The Huskies face the Andress Eagles next week.
