Here's what we know from watching the UTEP offense over the last six quarters that Ryan Metz has quarterbacked the team:

  1. Without Aaron Jones, they have not been able to run the ball with much effectiveness.
  2. The Miners suddenly have an explosive pass offense.

Now, let me qualify that second observation by reminding fans that UTEP carved up both the NMSU and Incarnate Word pass defenses in recent weeks. Truth is, the redshirt freshman signal caller is much better when he opens up the passing game and utilizes the Miners' deep threats. When the team chose a more conservative, run-oriented approach in the first half last Saturday, UIW was ready for them. Maybe that is why head coach Sean Kugler told the media today that he expects his team to throw the ball more downfield this weekend when they host UT-San Antonio. They will need to do just that, since UTEP's defense will more than likely struggle to stop the Roadrunners' offense.
