NEW YORK (AP) — Mark Sanchez will start at quarterback for the New York Jets in their preseason home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night.

The Jets announced the decision Thursday, a day after coach Rex Ryan said rookie Geno Smith had a "brutal" practice in what was his "worst day" of training camp. Smith is also dealing with a sprained right ankle.

Sanchez started the preseason opener at Detroit last Friday. Ryan says the plan against the Jaguars is not necessarily an indication of which quarterback leads in the tightly contested competition.

Sanchez has had a solid week of practices, while Smith threw four interceptions Wednesday, including three in 11-on-11 team drills.

The Jets break camp at SUNY Cortland on Thursday.
