Any hopes of UTEP leaving C-USA for the the Mountain West Conference might be on hold for awhile. San Diego State informed the Big East that they will remain in the MWC. That decision means that the MWC will have 12 football teams competing in this fall: Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming.

San Diego State was able to leave the Big East without playing an exit fee. That was thanks to Boise State's decision to leave the Big East and remain in the MWC. San Diego State's contract with the Big East included a no-exit fee clause if no other school remained west of the Rocky Mountains. Now, UTEP might have to wait for the MWC to expand to 14 schools before it has any chance to leave C-USA. That could be awhile if BYU elects to stay Independent and not return to the MWC for football.
