Legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was injured during a Nittany Lions practice Sunday, when junior wide receiver Devon Smith inadvertently slammed into him as the 84-year-old was taking notes with his head down.

While Paterno was able to finish the practice, it was later revealed he had suffered injuries to his shoulder and his hip that required hospitalization. Paterno’s son, Jay, said he expects his dad to be released sometime Tuesday, at which point he will be able to resume his coaching duties.

In 2006, Paterno broke his leg as a result of sideline collision during a game at the University of Wisconsin. Two years later, he suffered a hip injury demonstrating an onside kick, and had to spend most of the season coaching from the press box.

Paterno has coached Penn State since 1966.
