It was simple. Mexico needed a win over Costa Rica to at the least be in a playoff situation with New Zealand for a spot in Brazil and the 2014 World Cup.

Mexico lost to Costa Rica 2-1 and all hopes of having a chance to get to Brazil seemed lost.

Enter the United States, who had nothing to play for in there match against Panama. A match that with the Mexico loss and a Panama win would send Panama to the playoff against New Zealand.

But the US had a lot more pride than anyone expected, including Panama. The US made two goals in stoppage time and by doing so won the match (which gave them 22 points for the hex and tied the total points record), which cost Panama a shot at the playoff against New Zealand and sent Mexico to the playoff against New Zealand.
