BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU has hired former Southern California interim head coach Ed Orgeron as the Tigers' new defensive line coach.

The hiring of Orgeron, a Louisiana native known to have strong recruiting ties around his talent-rich state, comes a day after head coach Les Miles announced that Alabama assistant Kevin Steele would join LSU's staff as new defensive coordinator.

Orgeron also has held a head coaching job at Mississippi. His experience as an assistant includes stops at several major college programs as well as a stint with the NFL's New Orleans Saints.

He was part of the Tennessee and USC staffs when Lane Kiffin was head coach.

When Kiffin was fired at USC in 2013, Orgeron was appointed interim head coach until the entire staff was let go after that season.
