One of the downsides to being rich is that the rich are expected to bid exorbitant amounts on mostly worthless items in charity auctions.  I know they can later write off the expense, and the money goes to a worthy cause, but who really wants to drop $100,000 on a pair of slippers once worn by Marilyn Monroe?

I guess money is no object to some people who really want to own a piece of memorabilia, but I think the charity angle drives up the prices more than fandom.

The mask Kobe Bryant wore after Dwyane Wade broke his nose at the All Star Game was put on eBay.  All the proceeds went to the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation's Youth Homelessness Initiative.  After a week long bidding period the mask finally sold on Tuesday for a hefty price of $67,100.

THAT'S RIGHT, SOMEBODY PAID $67,100 FOR THIS PLASTIC MASK THAT KOBE BRYANT WORE FOR A FEW GAMES IN MARCH.
