Kicker Gets Call To Join Team an Hour Before Kickoff

Imagine pre-gaming at your fraternity house an hour before your school’s football team is about to play and you get a phone call from the coach to join the team for the game. That’s exactly what happened to University of Tennessee student, Derrick Brodus.

The Vols’ primary kicker had been injured in practice and their back-up kicker pulled a muscle during warm up on Saturday evening. That left coach Derek Dooley with only one option, to call Brodus, a former member of two state-championship football teams and an All-State soccer player in high school.

“’Let’s get a call to Brodus,’” Dooley said he told his staff, “and it’s a good thing he wasn’t having too much Saturday afternoon (fun). We called the frat house and had a policeman go get him. Dooley said, “I told the coaches, ‘Hey, an intoxicated Brodus is better than nobody. Just get him here and we’ll do a Breathalyzer.”

Brodus was shocked, and luckily sober, when he got the call. The other good news for the Vols was that Brodus was able to get suited up in time to score on each of his three point-after attempts, as well as one field goal, to help Tennessee beat MTS.

Unfortunately, he probably missed out on an awesome ‘keg kill’ back at the frat house. Can’t win them all.
