MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — New York Jets owner Woody Johnson says Rex Ryan will return as coach next season after the team finished 8-8 and knocked the Miami Dolphins out of playoff contention with a 20-7 win Sunday.

Ryan's job status was uncertain heading into the regular-season finale at Miami since the Jets have gone three straight years without a playoff appearance. It was unclear whether general manager John Idzik would want to hire his own coach heading into his second season on the job.

Neither Johnson nor Idzik previously commented on the situation, and Ryan said he hadn't heard what his fate would be.

Ryan, who had one year remaining on his contract, appeared loose after his final regular-season practice Friday — looking anything but someone who was on the verge of losing his job. Then his team beat its division rival Sunday.
