CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians have acquired outfielder Jason Kubel from Arizona, adding a left-handed hitter for their playoff push.

Kubel was designated for assignment this week by the Diamondbacks after he batted just .220 with five homers and 32 RBIs in 89 games. The 31-year-old, who hit 30 homers last season, had been reduced to mainly pinch-hitting duties. Kubel spent seven seasons in Minnesota before signing as a free agent with Arizona in 2011.

Cleveland scored just three runs and went 0-for-18 with runners in scoring position while being swept three straight in Atlanta. The Indians open a three-game series in Detroit on Friday.

The Tigers will start three right-handers against Cleveland, which enters the weekend 6 ½ games out of first in the AL Central and four back in the wild-card chase.
