As the high school football season moves along to Week 2, the meat and potatoes for Week 2 around El Paso is the good 6A matchups with out-of-town competition.

    Permian @ Franklin

For the second straight week Darren Walker and the Franklin Cougars face a tough out-of-town squad as this week Mojo invades the Sun City.

Franklin senior running back Eric Phillips ran for 142 yards last week against Midland High, but the Franklin defense could not stop nor contain Midland quarterback Jackson Anuskiewicz.

The Cougars rushed for an impressive 328 yards as a team, but allowed 466 total yards as Anuskiewicz threw for 200 yards, and ran for another 99 yards in a 56-28 season opening win.

Permian has one of the top playmakers in West Texas with Kobe Robinson running for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a come from behind win against Austin Vandergrift last week.

Expect a lot of points, and plenty of rushing yards in this one.

    Midland High @ Montwood

Montwood had a tough time stopping the run against Frenship last week, but the play of junior quarterback Andrew Fernandez should have the Rams feeling optimistic about their 1-6A chances.

The talented junior threw for 289 yards, and completed 61% of passes in a 24-14 loss to Frenship on the road in Week 1. But the Rams allowed almost 300 yards rushing, 219 of those coming from Frenship sophomore running back Garrison Johnson.

Montwood wide receiver Tyreese Andrus is as good as the preseason hype advertised racking up 120 yards on eight catches and will be major target for the Midland defense. Montwood also showed off a number of viable options in the passing game with Andrew Concha, Julian Perez, Tury Cepeda, and reliable running back Even De Anda.

Montwood will have to do a better job of taking care of the ball, and protecting Fernandez against a very athletic Midland defense.

Midland's Jalen Childress had 191 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns against Franklin last week, and the speedy slot receiver along with dual-threat quarterback Jackson Anuskiewicz gives Montwood two dynamic athletes to worry about on the defensive side.

    Frenship @ El Dorado

El Dorado got a big Week 1 performance from quarterback Cedarious Barfield, and will need another dynamic performance in Week 2 against a tough, and very physical Frenship squad.

As previously mentioned, the Tigers had no problem moving the ball on the ground led by Garrison Johnson who is the definition of a complete running back, and is just a sophomore.

Frenship did a good job of getting after the quarterback against Montwood last week, and will be a major test for El Dorado's offensive line who played nearly flawless against Eastlake.

You figure Frenship will force Barfield to stay in the pocket and make plays with his arm, so expect wideouts Tyquez Hampton and Jorge Hernandez to be more involved in the passing game this week.

A very winnable game for El Dorado will come down to slowing down Frenship's run game, and spreading out the production on the offensive side.

    Americas @ Rio Rancho (NM)

Americas brings their tough defense, and the city's top rusher Josh Fields to the Albuquerque area for a showdown with Rio Rancho.

The Storm ran for 440 yards as a team with senior running back Josh Foley leading the way with 357 yards, and three touchdowns on 19 carries in a surprising 34-7 drubbing of Las Cruces Mayfield last week.

This one will certainly be won at the line of scrimmage, as the physical culture both teams play with will be on full display Friday.

Fields is the difference maker, and his ability to hit home runs, and Americas' sheer nastiness in their defensive front seven should prevail in what could be a classic finish.

    Major 5A Showdown

For the second straight week, Eastlake takes on a district champ contender.

Chapin and head coach Rene Hernandez proved once again that Chapin doesn’t rebuild, they just reload.

This game could be full of big plays as Chapin quarterback Anthony Baird threw four touchdowns including a highlight reel hook up with athletic wideout Ryan Wilson who had two receiving touchdowns in their opening season win against Bel Air.

The Huskies look to have a number of skill guys who can make plays, and will be a tough out for anyone in district 1-5A.

The big news surrounding Eastlake is the health of running back Adrian Chavez who did not play in the second half of their game last week against El Dorado with an unknown injury.

The Falcons will have do a much better job taking care of the ball as they turned it over three times on offense, and once on special teams against El Dorado. But even without Chavez, they showed they have playmakers behind him like talented junior running back Ezekiel Jones, and veteran pass catchers Ivan Avina, and Nathan Macias.

This game should be an offensive shootout, with turnovers, and field position being deciding factors in game deciding moments.
