The Coronado Thunderbirds desperately needed a win last night after losing to Midland 38-14 in week 0.  The T-Birds defeated former district 1-5a rival Hanks 41-7 in a game shortened due to lightning.

Coronado made a statement on their first play from scrimmage as RB Bobby Chacon shocked the Hanks defense by scoring on a 66 touchdown run.  The T-Birds quick strike was foreshadowing for what was to come for the remainder of the contest.  Hanks' first possession resulted in a fumble by QB Emilio Noriega at the Coronado 41.

The Knights were never able to make the game competitive because of 4 turnovers throughout the evening.  They had 2 fumbles and 2 interceptions.  Coronado dominated the game on the ground and defensively as well.  T-Bird's RB Andres Guerrero had a remarkable game, scoring 3 touchdowns, including 2 rushing and 1 receiving.

Defensively Coronado's DB Nick Annabi performed brilliantly, picking off Hank's QB Emilio Noriega twice.  Annabi's second interception resulted in a 47 yard pick 6 for the T-Birds.  This was a statement win for Coronado, legendary coach Don Brooks retired, and Robert Anderson got his first victory as the T-Birds head coach.

Coronado's schedule doesn't get any earier as they travel to Irvin's Tony Shaw field to face Chapin next week, and then district 1-5A play begins as they face Americas on September 22nd.  Now that the T-Birds got their first win under their belts, they can focus on 2-4A powerhouse Chapin.  As the famous expression goes, take it one game at a time.
