Canutillo's undefeated season continued on Friday night at Lowenberg Stadium as they knocked off Burges 33-26 to win the Bi-District championship.  The Eagles, who have the top defense in the city, as they only allowed 184 points all season long, were tested in the first half of the game by Burges.

The Mustangs came into the contest on a winning streak of their own by defeating Chapin and El Paso High to conclude the regular season, and showed their resiliency early on by tying the game 7-7 with 3:31 reaming in the fist quarter thanks to a 5 yard QB keeper by Matteo Serrano.  The ponies took a 13-7 lead with 7:57 left in the first half when Serrano scored his second TD.

Canutillo answered when QB Danny Alvarez showed his skills off by with 4:44 before halftime with a quarterback keeper of his own to take the narrow 14-13 lead.  Burges was able to regain the lead in this seesaw battle just prior to the second quarter expiring when RB/DB Allen Rabb punched it in from 1 yard out to give the Mustangs a 19-14 advantage at halftime.

The Eagles came out in the second half poised to take control of the game as their offense scored three consecutive times in the third quarter, two of which were rushing touchdowns by QB Danny Alvarez.  The Eagles took a 33-19 lead into the fourth quarter before the Mustangs finally scored late in the game when Serrano found wide receiver Michael Amezaga for a 45 yard TD to cut Canutillo's lead to 33-26.

The Eagles' exceptional defense then sealed the deal by shutting Burges down the final four plus minutes of the game for the victory.  Canutillo's defense virtually shut down Burges in the second half by allowing only one touchdown, and forced them to become a one dimensional team by abandoning their ground game.

With the win Canutillo moves to 11-0 this season and will face Abilene Cooper in Midland potentially next Friday in the Area round of the playoffs. QB Danny Alvarez had an extraordinary game on the ground by rushing for 125 yards on 10 carries, and scored 3 touchdowns.  Running back Damian Martinez accumulated 145 yards on 29 carries, and contribute with 2 TD's.

Burges finishes their 2016 campaign with a 6-5 record, QB Matteo Serrano scored 2 rushing touchdowns, while running back George Frias rushed for 124 yards on 13 carries, becoming the only RB all season long to accumulate over 100 yards on the ground against the Eagles' stingy defense.
