The district races are heating up across El Paso as teams are starting to show where they'll finish. One of the biggest tests in District 1-5A came last week in the Sun Bowl with the annual West Side Bowl.
It's a tough job, but somebody hasn't done it. That sums up the word on UTEP's defense from head coach Sean Kugler. From the coaching staff to the players in the trenches, the Miners' head coach says UTEP will go to work to rectify what he sees to be poor tackling.
The Irvin Rockets gave the Chapin Huskies all they could handle in the first set of the teams' District 1-4A showdown at Irvin before the Huskies survived, 27-25. But Chapin then went on to dominate, winning the next two sets handily, 25-8, 25-6, to move to 6-0 in district play.
Great news, Miner fans! UTEP just got beat by a team with gear that looked like the illustrations of stomach acid in a Tums commercial, one of the ugliest combination of colors on a specialty uniform ever.
Miners head coach Sean Kugler thought UTEP could have done better after a 32-13 loss to UTSA in the first-ever meeting between the two Conference USA schools. But, though he was disappointed in consistency, he praised the Miners' effort.
The Chapin Huskies looked to make a statement to open the defense of their District 1-4A crown. It took coach Rene Hernandez's squad until the fourth quarter to do it, but eventually the Huskies' athleticism wore down the Burges Mustangs earning Chapin its first win of the season, 26-14.
For the first time ever, UTEP will face UTSA in the Conference USA opener for both teams Saturday in the Sun Bowl in a game that could end up being a great conference rivalry. So, how are Sean Kugler and the Miners getting ready for the Roadrunners?
The second-ranked Coronado Thunderbirds have seven sophomores and a freshman on their varsity team but showed a lot of poise in defeating the top-ranked Cougars at Franklin on Time Warner Cable Sports.
