LOS ANGELES — The Arizona Diamondbacks scored each of their runs in bases-loaded situations. The Los Angeles Dodgers kept putting runners on, and stranding them.

That was the difference between Wade Miley and Chad Billingsley on Tuesday night.

Miley wiggled out of a couple of jams while pitching into the seventh inning and the Diamondbacks snapped the Los Angeles Dodgers’ five-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory.

LOS ANGELES – Matt Kemp and his teammates didn’t spent much time celebrating their three-game sweep of the slumping Colorado Rockies. All their attention was focused on whether his troublesome left hamstring would result in a lengthy absence from the lineup.

Kemp, who leads the Los Angeles Dodgers with 12 homers and a .359 batting average, left Sunday’s 11-5 victory because of an irritated left hamstring after grounding out in the third inning. The All-Star center fielder has played in 399 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the majors, but that streak is in serious jeopardy.

LOS ANGELES – Tony Gwynn Jr. had just gotten into the batting cage and was starting to take swings when he heard his name called as a pinch hitter.

He worked the count against Tim Lincecum before roping a go-ahead three-run triple one inning after San Francisco’s Nate Schierholtz ran into a critical out that helped kill a Giants rally, and the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers went on to a 6-2 victory Wednesday night.

LOS ANGELES — New Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson stepped up to a microphone set behind home plate and shouted: “It’s time for Dodger baseball!”

The Dodgers didn’t disappoint.

Ted Lilly outpitched Barry Zito through six innings, and Los Angeles beat the error-prone San Francisco Giants 9-1 on Monday night in the Dodgers’ first home game since changing ownership last week.

CHICAGO — A long day at Wrigley Field ended with a walk home.

David DeJesus drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift theChicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

The win came after the teams waited out a 2-hour, 41-minute rain delay, and a ninth-inning comeback by the Cubs.

CHICAGO – Chris Capuano beat the Chicago Cubs with his bat and his arm on Saturday. Guess which one he’ll remember more?

Capuano threw seven shutout innings and drove in two runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-1 win over the Cubs.

Capuano (4-0) held Chicago to three hits and struck out seven, extending his scoreless innings streak to 18 2-3. His two-run double in the second gave him his first RBIs since Aug. 24, 2007.

CHICAGO – Paul Maholm looked shaky in his first two starts of the season, continuing a terrible stretch that started last year.

A couple weeks later, he’s on quite the little roll.

Maholm pitched six crisp innings for his third consecutive win, and the Chicago Cubs held on for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

In his illustrious career, Roy Jones Jr. has won a lot of fights and held a lot of belts.  Even though he works as an analyst for HBO he doesn’t feel like his first career is over, despite turning 43 in January.

Jones feels that Cotto has at least a punchers chance if he can be the aggressor and rattle Mayweather early in the fight.

Shane Mosley has 20 years on his opponent, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, but Jones thinks Mosley can win the fight.  According to Jones, ‘lately he (Mosley) hasn’t been looking like he wants to win.’

Jones on Bernard Hopkins losing to Chad Dawson last weekend:

“No, father time didn’t catch up with him (Hopkins), father opponent caught up with him.”

Jones on the struggles late in his career after starting out 49-1:

“What hit me was, not father time, not father opponent, but father not setting a damn goal.”

Baseball Prospectus Senior Writer Jay Jaffe

On Wednesday afternoon, Baseball Prospectus writer Jay Jaffe joined Sportstalk for his weekly chat around the Majors.
