“I really truly do take it one day at a time, and tomorrow we’ll try to get better at something else.  Looking down the line or predicting wins, you’ll never hear that from me, all I’m going to do is say that tomorrow we are going to better than we were today.”

“Football is a very disciplined game and games come down to the 4th quarter and discipline, wins in the 4th quarter, it has to be established early in every program not just ours.  We have a certain way that we are going to do it and hopefully that’s a way that helps us win games.”

“I really treated it like another game, but when you get into it and you see the crowd and everything the magnitude of it is a lot.  It really doesn’t sink in until quite some time after the game what that game really is.”

Kenny Albert has been the voice of the New York Rangers on the radio since 1996, so who better to preview the Rangers vs Boston Bruins series and Albert joined SportsTalk on Tuesday.

Albert previews the Rangers vs Bruins, discusses the remaining semifinal series left in the NHL, Redwings vs Black Hawks, Kings vs Sharks, Penguins vs Senators and much more.

“Nash obviously happy they won a round, he had never won a playoff round in his career, he’ll look to get on the board in round two against Boston.”

Film maker Aviva Kempner who wrote and produced the film, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, joined SportsTalk on Tuesday to discuss the rerelease of the DVD.

Kempner talks about Hank Greenberg, his legacy, why she rereleased the DVD, tells stories, Andy and Sid Cohn, who Pablo Garcia was and much more!

“There is a whole section where Ted Williams talks about Hank’s hitting and how they would compare each other as hitters.”

Last month, Abie Han was in our 600 ESPN El Paso studios to talk about the Austin Trout-Canelo Alvarez fight. Han, who spent three weeks sparring with his good friend Trout, also had a chance to weigh-in on his own professional career. After five years and an undefeated record, the native El Pasoan explained to us that he was ready for a bigger test.

“I want tougher fight, I want the big names, and I haven’t got it so far. We’ve talked to Top Rank, pushed the issue for the past seven or eight months, and I think they’ve finally listened to us. If I can get this fight (with Tapia), this can break me out from the rest of the pack and get me a title opportunity.”

Top Rank has in fact, granted Han his wish and set up the biggest test in his career on Friday night, June 14th at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas. Han will meet fellow undefeated Top Rank prospect Glen Tapia in a 154-pound clash will be televised on ESPN 2 as part of the “Friday Night Fights” series. Han cannot wait for the opportunity and explained why he wants to step into the ring against a better boxer.

“Why be in this business if you’re not going to fight the best? If I keep fighting bums over and over again, what’s that going to solve? I prove nothing, my skills are going to deteriorate, and I’ll be 35 and not beaten any names. I want to see if I’m the best and if I’m not the best, then I can move onto something else.”

With the NBA Playoffs heating up, it was a pleasure to have Henry Abbott, from TrueHoop Blog on ESPN.com, on SportsTalk to break down the match ups after each series has played one game.

Abbott talks about the Knicks vs Pacers, JR Smith, the Bulls vs Heat, Nate Robinson, the Derrick Rose situation, San Antonio vs Golden State and much more!

“The Warriors have a very good team offense and they are capable of getting good looks for their guys but they just went all kinds of hero ball late.”

Coming off of last night’s thrilling double overtime game between the Spurs and the Warriors in San Antonio, Hall of Fame play-by-play broadcaster, Dick Stockton joined us today on SportsTalk!

Stockton talks about the lady that was annoyingly loud after every big Spurs basket down the stretch, the Spurs vs Warriors game and series, the Bulls vs Heat series, the Pacers vs Knicks series, the Grizzlies and Thunder series and much more!

 ”I have to be honest, I didn’t even realize that that was the case. I heard about it today, I didn’t notice it at the time… I don’t know where she was sitting, was she sitting near us? I don’t know?”

Coming off his 12th place finish at this past weekends Aaron’s 312 at Talladega, El Pasoan and NASCAR Nationwide driver of the Viva Auto Group Chevrolet #55, Jamie Dick joined us on SportsTalk on Monday.

Dick talks about his best finish of the year, racing on a super speedway, the final lap crash and the finish of the Nationwide race, the strategy he and his team chose to use, his schedule for the rest of the year and much more.

“I definitely feel more comfortable, I feel like I am a better race car driver than I was a few months ago. That just comes with seat time and going to the race track every week.”

I fortunate to have a  fantastic opportunity today.

Thanks to Steve’s hair, he asked me to interview Antonio Tarver so we could have a preview of the Mayweather vs Guerrero fight taking place tomorrow night.

The interview was going really well and I was just about to wrap it up when, Bernard Hopkins interview bombs me and hi-jacks the interview. Just crazy.

Before Hopkins takes over, Tarver talks about Mayweather’s lack of ring activity and if it will hurt him, will the fight be better than a fight between the dads, will Guerrero be ready to face his toughest fight of his career and much more including the surprise visit from Bernard Hopkins.

“I am thinking he (Guerrero) will be ready but being ready doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be enough.”

This Saturday, May 4, Hallmark Channel will be premiering, Mr Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story.

Thursday on SportsTalk, we had the pleasure of having the man that is playing Gordie Howe in the movie, Michael Shanks.

Shanks is best known for his role as Dr. Daniel Jackson in the long running science fiction series, Stargate SG-1.

Shanks talks about how he got the role, becoming Gordie Howe, the family side of the movie, replicating the time period of the movie, making the hockey realistic and much more.

“When you think of the Gordie Howe story, you immediately think it is a sports movie and there for should be on ESPN for example… it is not just about the hockey but the journey of the family”

With City Hall now down and the site for the ballpark almost cleared and construction about to begin, the process in getting a Triple A Baseball team is beginning.

The President of Mountain Star Sports Group, Alan Ledford, was on the SportsTalk today to announce the “Name the Team” contest.

Ledford goes through all the steps of the contest. How and where you enter, what you can win, rules for submitting your entry, what it means to you and the City of El Paso to participate and much more.

“The first step in the process is to ask the entire community to submit entries… then we will choose a handful of names to submit back to the community for everyone to vote on.”

With the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs upon us, we wanted to have someone to break them down for us and who better than long time player and now broadcaster, Randy Moller, the voice of the Florida Panthers.

Moller has become famous for his goal calls that mix in pop culture. The calls have become so famous that they are now referred to as “Mollerisms”.

Moller breaks down the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for us and gives us his thoughts on the NHL postseason plus much more.

“I think too that hopefully it is going to be a cleansing… because we are still recovering from the shortened season because of the work stoppage, I think we have almost closed the door on that and hopefully this playoffs series and this Stanley Cup run will help close the door on that.”

Marcus joined SportsTalk today to discuss the Jets trading Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the state of the New York Jets. He was also calling us from Game 2 of the Brooklyn Nets/Chicago Bulls series at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, so Steve threw in some Playoff basketball too.

“The blame in the situation doesn’t even start with Revis, it actually starts with the Jets back loading a lot of deals and putting themselves up against it as far as the cap goes.”

Just two days after Austin ‘No Doubt’ Trout had a somewhat controversial loss to Canelo Alvarez, he joined us on SportsTalk.

Trout talks about the reception he received coming home today, the fight, how he felt about the scoring, the comment he made after the fight and much more.

“I don’t believe he is the better fighter, I believe he was the better fighter that night… i am just itching to get back in the ring and prove my worth.”

The Harold Letterman interview is below.

“The primary factor for scoring a round is who did the most damage… it’s not easy you know unless a guy gets knocked around or his head gets snapped back.”

Here is the interview with  Austin Trout’s trainer, Louie Burke.

“I knew for a fact that he (Alvarez) was a much better boxer than people were giving him credit for… I felt his left hook was overrated and his right hand was way underrated.”

Showtime Boxing Analyst, Al Bernstein joined us on SportsTalk today from San Antonio to talk about the Trout Vs Alvarez fight tomorrow night.

Bernstein talks about both fighters and what he thinks both Alvarez and Trout have to do to win the fight, his new book that is on audio book and much more.

“Two fighters who are waiting to pass their most important test… this is a great fight for boxing because it is two fighters at their best stepping into the ring.”

With the NBA Playoffs starting on Saturday, we brought in the long time play-by-play announcer and voice of the Brooklyn Nets, Ian Eagle to break down the playoffs.

Eagle not only talks about the Brooklyn Nets and what he thinks about their chances against the Chicago Bulls but he also breaks down the NBA Playoffs by going through the Eastern and Western Conference playoff picture.

“You think back to a year ago… the Nets signed Brook Lopez… little did they know he was the big man to build a team around… as it turns out, the big man they signed out of Stanford was the right man all along.”

Paulie Malignaggi, the WBA Welterweight Champion of the World, will be a part to the telecast  for Showtime Championship Boxing on Saturday night for the Austin ‘No Doubt’ Trout Vs. Canelo Alvarez in San Antonio for WBA Light Middleweight Championship in the Alamodome.

Malignaggi breaks down the upcoming fight between Trout and Alvarez, what he thinks each fighter needs to do to win, how he likes broadcasting as compared to fighting and much more.

“I ask myself, what would Austin Trout do if he was to find himself in a position where he was in his home town and expected to win the fight?”

We are beginning a new SportsTalk segment called, ‘SportsTalk Flashback’.

Each week we will be going back to an interview that Steve has done and we will replay it on air and then it will be posted here on 600espnelpaso.com.

To begin the Flashbacks, we give you Pat Summerall from 1997. Summerall passed away on Monday at the age of 82.

One of the great broadcasters of all time, Summerall was inducted into the Sun Bowl Hall of Fame in 1997 and a young Steve Kaplowitz just months on the job with SportsTalk had Summerall on to discuss the Hall of Fame and many other things.

“In fact if I didn’t get the Sun Bowl assignment in the years I was at CBS, it was pretty upsetting because I looked forward to it.”
