Jose Bautista, J.J. Hardy and Jason Kipnis each drove in runs, and the American League beat the National League, 3-0, in the 2013 MLB All-Star Game at Citi Field in New York. Retiring Yankees’ closer Mariano Rivera was named the game’s most valuable player after a perfect inning of work. The victory was the A.L.’s first since 2009 in St. Louis.

Ten A.L. pitchers held N.L. batters to three hits in the game. Bautista’s sacrifice fly off Patrick Corbin in the fourth inning snapped a 17-inning scoreless streak for the A.L. Hardy added an RBI-groundout in the fifth inning, and Kipnis doubled in a run in the eighth.

The all-stars on both teams cleared the field as Rivera entered the game prior to the bottom of the eighth inning. Before play resumed, players and fans gave the MLB career saves leader an extended standing ovation while he stood alone on the Citi Field mound.

The 43-year-old Rivera announced before the season that this would be his last campaign. He retired Jean Segura, Allen Craig and Carlos Gomez in order. Rangers’ closer Joe Nathan pitched the ninth to notch the save.

The 2014 MLB All-Star Game is scheduled for Target Field in Minnesota.
